Getting the Message

Do the ways in which we experience text through current digital mediums alter or devalue the semantical significance of the original text?

In order to support my thesis, I chose to provide examples of re-contextualization in social media. Choosing theorist Walter Benjamin’s quote, “All human knowledge takes the form of interpretation,” I discovered online social media users that had posted the same quote but had re-contextualized it through their application of hashtags, filters, images, and comments.

Exhibited at the Center for Visual Arts Gallery, my installation was composed of three components: a book presenting the original quote, an iPad featuring a self-made Instagram page which presented the social media posts of the quote, inviting the audience to share the content, and a video projection that framed the stagnant quote on the wall, thus altering its semantical significance through imagery and text. The images presented in the video projection were a collective of self-made visual frames paired with actual social media posts represented on the Instagram page.
